Art is not a product whose manufacture can be rationalized. Art is what you can’t even see until you make it. - Jesse Green, NYMag

Seeing theater. Not watching theater.

It’s seeing because it’s an event. You can watch a movie on your laptop, but you don’t watch a play. You go to see a play.

For example: you saw Wicked 10 times. You didn’t watch it 10 times.

I understand the grammar of it and yes, “saw Wicked” is correct, I agree wholeheartedly. But what about experiencing theatre?

Both watching and seeing imply passivity and the use of only one sense. (I’m not going to go into the “spectator” debate, I promise. Although I could have that conversation for hours.)

Theatre is a real life experience, an experience that involves your whole body if you’re a self-aware theatre goer, which I think is what people (or at least avid theatre goers, theatre makers, and theatre academics) should strive towards.

I’m just one person, but I think good theatre makes you experience something. Something in your body, something in your mind; it’s not just something for your eyes. It’s something for your brain and for your, dare I say it, soul.

I’m not necessarily saying we should start saying “I experienced Wicked.” However, if a piece of theatre moved you in more ways than just that once sense perception, would we be wrong?

carlosbaila:

When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. at her 2010 MoMa retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened.”

These comical, absurd and intimate to-camera performances are schematic diagrams of Shakespeare – lovingly made miniatures which condense the world of each play to a one metre square tabletop and summon it with a collection of banal materials and objects.

ugh, world. and amazing immersive theatre. stop it. if only I...

ugh, world. and amazing immersive theatre. stop it. if only I was in NY (and over 21…) to see this!

(Programs are given out only at the conclusion.) What you will experience is the feeling that children sometimes have of being swept up into busy, self-important social rituals that make no sense. And of spying on adult activities that don’t make much sense either and are equally creepy and thrilling.
